Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
One of the greatest lessons a horse can teach us is emotional discipline.
The moment we allow our emotions to take over, we’ve stopped leading. We’ve stepped away from clear thinking and into reaction, and that’s where communication begins to break down.
Emotional neutrality isn’t about ignoring your feelings. It’s about choosing not to let those feelings make your decisions. When you stay calm, present, and focused, you’re able to respond with purpose instead of reacting out of frustration.
If your horse becomes anxious or unsettled, don’t follow them into that emotional state. Be the leader who stays steady. Your confidence, consistency, and clear energy give your horse something to trust and something to return to.
The best horsemen aren’t the ones who never face challenges. They’re the ones who refuse to let emotion take the reins.
This is one of the core principles I share in the chapter “Manage Your Emotions" from Clear Mental Horsemanship: Imagine Your Ride by Dennis Cappel.
