Horses are always reading us. Energy is not a vague idea in horsemanship; it is a language they understand and respond to every day.
Before you ever pick up a rein, your horse has already noticed your posture, your breathing, your focus, your intention, and your emotional state. As horsemen and horsewomen, we have to learn to communicate with clarity, consistency, and timing.
Just as we work to understand our horses' level of awareness, curiosity, confidence, and intention, we must also learn to understand and control our own energy.
Good horsemanship means being able to adjust your energy when needed. Knowing when to become more focused, more present, or more relaxed allows your horse to better understand what you are asking.
When your horse learns that your actions, your focus, and your energy have meaning, communication becomes clearer and trust grows.
The better we read our horses, the better they can read us. That is when we begin to truly speak the same language.
