When people think about communicating with a horse, they often think about the halter, lead rope, or bridle. But those aren’t the first tools you use.

Your first communication tool is your energy.

The only thing between you and your horse is the space between you. Horses are incredibly aware of that space, and they constantly read your body language, posture, and intent.

If I want a horse to move away, I’ll raise my energy. I become more intentional and project that energy toward the horse. When my communication is clear, the horse responds by moving its feet.

If I want less energy, I soften my posture. Standing slightly sideways projects less pressure than standing squarely in front of the horse. Turning your back completely releases the conversation.

Every position of your body tells the horse something.

The key is making sure your body language matches what you’re asking. Horses learn to trust us when our communication is clear, consistent, and easy to understand.

Before you ever pick up a lead rope, remember that your horse has already been listening to you.
