Riding With Feel: Meeting the Horse Where He Is

Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
Horses don’t think in words. They respond to pressure, timing, and energy. That’s why feel is so important it’s your language. If it’s unclear or inconsistent, the horse gets confused. If it’s too heavy, he resists. If it’s too light, he may ignore it.
The goal isn’t just to “have feel,” but to use the right feel at the right time and in the right amount.
Riders also have different natural styles. Some are soft and subtle with pressure. Others are more direct or heavy-handed. Neither is automatically better, but it does change how a horse responds to them.
Horses are just as different. Some are naturally light and responsive. Others are duller and take more effort to get a reaction. Most are somewhere in between.
That’s why feel matters: you have to meet the horse where he is, not where you wish he was. Start with the least amount of pressure, then build from there.
Mindful Riding,
Dennis Cappel
