If your horse is constantly losing shoes, it’s usually not just bad luck.
A well-balanced horse with a strong hoof and a properly fitted shoe shouldn’t lose them often. When they do, it’s typically from something like overreaching or getting hung up.
Common reasons horses lose shoes
Frequent shoe loss usually points to a bigger issue.
Moisture Matters
Moisture is one of the biggest culprits. Horses’ hooves that cycle between wet and dry, soften and weaken, causing nails to loosen. Once the shoe shifts, it doesn’t take much to pull it off.
Summer & Flies
Summer brings another challenge - flies. Constant stomping puts stress on the hoof and can loosen shoes over time. It’s very common to see more shoe loss during fly season.
Growth & Timing
Growth and timing matter too. Hooves grow faster in the spring, and if a shoe isn’t reset in time, the foot outgrows it and makes it easier to lose.
Movement & Environment
Turnout, movement, and interference all add to the risk.
The Bottom Line
At the end of the day, repeated shoe loss is usually a sign, not a coincidence. Pay attention to the cause, and you can prevent a lot of it.
Every Foot Matters.
Mindful Riding,
