Horse-man-ship Mentality – Timing and Feel Clarification
Cowboy Wisdom from Dennis,
Timing and feel together make up the elements of success or failure when it comes to riding your horse.
When you ask a horse to do anything there is a time to apply pressure and a time not to.
The more appropriate your timing is the less pressure is required; this is where true lightness is developed. If you are early or late the pressure that you apply might still be effective, but it will be met with resistance from the horse. This is because their body and mind are having to adjust to what you are asking because the horse is not ready.
However, when the rider feels the thoughts and body of the horse are positioned and ready to move the feet in the direction and speed their asking, the slightest bit of contact at that point (in a good horse) will produce beautiful movement.
All of this depends on you, having the almighty “Clear Mental Picture” of what you want the horse to do and you have spent enough time in the saddle so that you can recognize through feel when the horse is ready for you to ask for what you want.
Mindful Riding,
