Horse-man-ship Mentality – Only one good option for great horsemanship!
Cappel Cowboy Wisdom.
Everything matters! Every time you come into your horse’s presence there is an opportunity for your relationship with that horse to either improve, stay the same, or decline. Let us look at each one of those aspects.
Decline: this one is fairly straightforward in that if your horse does something that you do not want them to do and you do nothing to correct it, the message you are sending to your horse is – go ahead and do anything you want because I am not going to do anything about it. Which produces, at best, confusion for the horse the next time you decide you want him to do something.
Staying the same: this is often time-related. What I mean by that is it might seem like your horse is staying the same but in fact there is an effect of familiarity taking place that will often numb the horse to your presence. Therefore, staying the same is in an effect putting the horse-human relationship on a negative decline.
Improving: to me this is the only option. I feel like if I do not do something to improve the relationship when the horse is in my presence, I am failing in my role as the leader of this relationship. Therefore, every step matters, every thought matters, every move matters on both my part and the horse’s.
When this thought process becomes the habit of the handler the opportunity for never-ending improvement will become the normal way of being for both horse and human. This will produce positive results for both parties, helping your horsemanship to excel.
