Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
In horsemanship—as in life—clarity doesn't come from knowing everything. It comes from choosing something and sticking with it long enough to fully understand it.
Today, learning is easier and more confusing than it’s ever been. A quick internet search can replace what once took decades of mentorship. But what’s lost in that convenience is the slow, steady development of understanding—the kind that used to come from listening to a clear voice of experience over many years.
In this post, I want to talk about the challenge of learning in a world where everyone is a teacher and every answer is just one confident voice among thousands. And more importantly, how to find clarity in the middle of all that noise. Modern technology has made it incredibly easy to learn just about anything—just ask Google “How.” Who would have thought that a simple search could replace the wisdom that once came only from a person who had dedicated their entire life to the study and practice it took to master a skill?
But here’s the problem as I see it:
For someone who genuinely wants to learn something—say, horse shoeing—it can quickly become overwhelming. The internet is flooded with conflicting concepts and philosophies, each backed by a loud, confident voice shaped by personal experience. And because all of it ends up on Google, it becomes almost impossible for a beginner to decide who to follow, or which approach is right for them.
My advice? Choose the ideology that resonates most with your personality and follow it until you really understand it. Once you’ve developed a solid foundation, you’ll be in a better position to compare it with other perspectives and eventually shape a philosophy that’s uniquely your own.
Then one day, you’ll be the confident voice feeding information to Google—or perhaps confusing the next generation of eager learners.
