3 Things We Horses Wish You Knew

Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
Dear Human,
We love that you care for us, but sometimes we wish you could step into our hooves and see the world the way we do. Here are three truths that could change the way we understand each other:
1. We are not dogs.
Please stop comparing us! Dogs are predators; we are prey. That changes everything. Dogs chase; we flee. Dogs hunt; we scan the horizon. So, when you expect us to act like a loyal pup who just wants to please, you miss how deeply wired we are to notice every sound, movement, and feeling around us. Understanding this is the first step toward true partnership.
2. We like it cooler than you think.
You bundle up in coats and blankets when the air gets chilly, but our bodies are for the cold. Around forty degrees, we feel just right! Our hair grows, thickens, and even traps air to keep us warm. When humans overblanket us or close us into tight, stuffy spaces, our natural system gets confused, and often, our health suffers. Trust our design: we were born with everything we need to manage the seasons.
3. We feel more than you realize.
You may think we do not notice your moods, but oh boy, do we ever! We are like emotional sponges, soaking up your energy. If you are tense, anxious, or distracted, we feel it. While you often live in the past or worry about the future, we, the horse, live fully in the moment. That is why our reactions can seem sudden or surprising; they're not drama, it's survival. When you join us in the present, everything becomes calmer and clearer.
So, dear human, if you could remember just these three things, our time together would be safer, kinder, and much more connected. We do not need you to be perfect; we just need you to understand us for who we really are.
Love,
Your Horse
Mindful Riding,
