Resistance in the Hip – Resistance series part 7
When we talk about resistance in the horse’s body, each area brings its own importance, but the hips are especially key. That is because the hindquarters are the engine. They carry the power, the push, and the potential for forward movement.
If there’s resistance in the hip tightness, brace, or a lack of engagement, you will feel it in everything the horse does. You will notice them dragging their feet, swinging hind end out of alignment or struggle to follow through with a request. You might feel like you are always chasing their backend or unable to keep them straight.
The hips often resist when the horse is unsure, unbalanced, or emotionally guarded. They may feel vulnerable and try to protect themselves by stiffening or evading. That is why it is so important to approach this area with clarity, softness, and trust.
When the hip begins to release, the horse starts to carry themselves differently. Their steps become more purposeful, and they will drive from behind instead of pulling from the front. You will feel more unity, more willingness, and a greater sense of rhythm and forward intention.
True engagement of the hip does not come from pushing harder it comes from the horse understanding your feel and choosing to connect. That is when movement becomes effortless, and the partnership starts to flow.
