Unlocking the Horse’s Shoulders: Releasing Resistance with Clarity – Resistance series part 5
After addressing resistance in the neck, the next area to check is the shoulders. Resistance in the horse’s body is rarely isolated; it is often connected. When the neck and jaw are stiff, the shoulders usually are too. The shoulders are unique because horses often use them like a shield. They will push through pressure with them, leaning in or bracing instead of yielding. Recognizing this allows us to be more aware of how and where to offer clarity so the horse learns to release tension and follow a clear feel.
When you feel resistance in the shoulders, it is important not to fight against it. Instead, redirect the energy. Ask the horse to move its shoulders in a specific direction with clarity and intention. A step to the side, a slight turn on the forehand, or a soft lateral yield can help unlock that tension. When the horse feels they can move without pressure or confusion, they begin to let go of the brace. This is not about forcing; it is about guiding.
Every place of resistance is an opportunity, not a problem. When we approach it with patience and clarity, the horse begins to trust our guidance and let go of the need to protect or defend.
“When the horse feels understood, they no longer feel the need to resist.”
Mindful Riding,
