“Stiff-Necked” Horse – Resistance series part 4

When a horse feels stiff in the neck, it is usually not a physical issue; it is mental. The resistance you feel when trying to bend their neck is not coming from the muscles; it comes from their thoughts.

If you just pull on the reins, they will often brace harder by sticking their nose out, moving their feet, or leaning against your hand. That is not softness. True softness starts in the mind.

Instead of pulling, I use the bit with a little life, gently moving it across the tongue to suggest, not demand. When they soften at the poll, the neck begins to follow. Even the slightest try a tiny give is worth noticing and rewarding. That is how they learn where relief is.

Over time, they will not only bring their face around when asked, but they will start to soften through the whole neck and spine. I also want vertical softness, not just side-to-side, but the ability to lift and shape the neck wherever needed.

The key is: softness in the neck comes from clarity and connection in the mind. Get their thoughts with you, and the body will follow.

Mindful Riding,
