Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
Before you even get on your horse, it is crucial to read how they are feeling. Horses are always aware of us and if they become too comfortable without respect, unwanted behaviors can quietly develop.
Kindness from us means more when it is earned. When a horse earns our respect through responsiveness, that respect becomes valuable to them, just like how we value earned achievements more than gifts.
Effective, simple tasks, your horse will know you are the leader.
*If your horse seems complacent or lethargic, raise your energy to get them moving and awake. When they respond positively, reward them by easing pressure.
*If your horse is uneasy or fearful, encourage movement to help release tension. Watch for signs of softening: ears turning toward you, head lowering, relaxed muscles. This shows they are ready and calm.
*If your horse takes a step you did not ask for, your horse is checking to see if you noticed their movement, or you might have something for them. In that moment, if you do not make them take the step of their choice back, you have just told them they are in control, and you will allow them to move at their own free will.
Reading your horse’s body language moment by moment, step by step, builds trust, safety, and connection. It is a skill developed over time, but it is key to being a confident, effective rider.
Mindful Riding,
