Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
Winter is often one of the healthiest times of the year for a horse’s feet, especially when there’s snow on the ground.
Snow tends to have a natural cleaning effect, keeping the bottom of the foot healthier. Occasionally, you may see snowballing in a horse’s hoof, but it usually comes out easily on its own. Older horses or those that don’t move around much may get more buildup. If you’re around, you can help them by knocking the packed snow or ice out gently using a hoof pick or a small hammer.
There are also special pads that can be placed between the shoe and the hoof to help prevent snowballing, but most of the time they aren’t necessary.
Trimming and Hoof Condition in Winter
Cold weather can make the hoof wall more brittle, which means cracks may occur a little more easily. Keeping the foot properly maintained with a balanced trim and leaving adequate sole and hoof wall for support is the best approach.
Thrush in Winter
Thrush is generally less of a problem in winter than in summer. However, if you have an area that stays consistently wet or muddy, excess moisture can still create conditions where thrush may develop.
General Winter Challenges
Horses tend to do quite well in the winter. They aren’t stomping flies and often seem more comfortable than in hotter months. Frozen ground, however, can be challenging. Horses will naturally move more slowly across uneven, frozen surfaces just like we do.
The Bottom Line
A good farrier who can keep your horse’s hooves balanced and properly maintained is essential year-round, but especially in winter when conditions can vary. With proper care, most horses navigate the colder months without major problems.
