Clear Mental Horsemanship with Dennis Cappel
Fear is something every horseman encounters, no matter how much experience they have. In my work, I often describe fear using the acronym F.E.A.R., false evidence appearing real. Fear feels very real in the moment, but it is not always an accurate picture of what is happening.
Horses are honest about fear. When a horse becomes afraid, it is not being difficult or resistant. The horse is responding to uncertainty. Often, a fearful horse wants to face what is bothering it. That awareness gives us an opportunity to help the horse find clarity rather than escalating the situation.
When I am riding a fearful horse, my goal is not to force the issue. I redirect the horse’s attention by calmly organizing their feet and guiding their focus away from the source of fear. As the horse begins to understand what I am asking and gains a clear mental picture, the fear starts to dissolve. Fear disappears not because it was fought, but because the horse finally understands.
There are times when a horse’s fear creates a situation that does not feel safe. In those moments, I do not push forward; I ride away from what is upsetting the horse and help them settle at a safe distance. When the horse’s expression tells me they are calmer and more confident, we gradually work back toward the concern. This process allows the horse to build confidence while maintaining safety and trust.
Many clients come to me carrying fear from past experiences. That fear can be crippling and often keeps them from wanting to ride or even approach similar situations again. What I offer is experience and understanding. I show them how to create distance, regain calm, and allow the horse’s response to guide the next step forward. As both the horse and rider gain a clear mental picture, confidence begins to replace fear.
Fear will happen. It does not matter how long you have been riding or how much experience you have. What matters is how you respond when it shows up. With the right guidance, timing, and understanding, fear becomes an invitation to learn, to grow, and to find a new sense of freedom.
Fear is not your enemy.
It is an invitation.
Mindful Riding,
